National Museum of Women in the Arts

I recenlty joined a group on the social networking site Linkedin called Women in Photography. The group is meant to bring women photographers from around the world together to discuss new ideas, ask questions and network. One of the latest discussions was on the National Museum of Women in the Arts. I had no idea this even existed but it does and is located in Washington, D.C.

Check out the site for yourself, here, I might have to make a trip to D.C. sooner than later now.

Vintage Pentax LX Special Gold Edition, 1981

If yoo're wondering who still shoots film? I do. I love it and it's sad because so many people have gone digital that film is about to be a lost art. Moving on past my mini rant I really wanted to show off this Pentax camera I saw a picture of over on the ffffound.com blog. I wasn't even born yet when this lovely piece of photgraphic equipment was put on the market! And honestly, I've never been a Pentax fan but I would snatch this camera up in a heart beat. Yummm...

Geraldine Georges

I wanted to share with all of you the world of Geraldine Georges a Belgium graphic artist. Her work is amazing! It appears as if she draws inspiration from the female form. An image (mostly photographs) is manipulated and then incorporated with other elements into her pieces turning them into a mixed media piece. Georges website also shows her photography and has links to jobs she was worked on, one to note- The New York Times. Make sure you check out her website here for a deeper look into her work.

James Blagden

You may have already seen some of James Blagden's work if you're a fan of Frank 151, Wax Poetics, Mass Appeal (R.I.P. print version), Flaunt, King; these are just a few of the magazines that James has done work with. I happened to stumble upon his website via ffffound.com. They posted up an image that was used in KING Mag (see above) about one of Ohio's 'odd' laws, "OHIO STATE OF AFFAIRS WHY IT'S ILLEGAL TO WEAR PANTENT LEATHER SHOES IN THE OH."

Note to self, do not pack your patent leather pumps when visiting Ohio.

hahahahaa...

Check out more of James works here.

CGD Deisgn

The remaining four members of the program I'm in at MACD were all asked create a redesign for the CGD (Certificate in Graphic Design) program brochure. We all had to create a different concept/designs and then the director would chose one or elements of this one or that one. After one concept was chosen we were asked to create 2-3 different designs and mock them up. We had maybe a week to bang it out. All four of us have full time jobs as well as our other class we have on Saturday to make time for so this project to say the least was a bit of a challenge.

The four of us students broke off into two groups and began our creative processes. Molly Hein and I came up with a “border book” design to make the trading cards an extra element to the design while not straying from the important content. The cards in this design will tear off effortlessly due to perforation and offer up handy tips to prospective students as they prepare to commit to the program. After extensive image research along with studying the way advertising took place in the late Fifties into the Sixties we came up with what you see. Creating the “campy” look they pulled borders from old fanzie Elvis trading cards and mimicked some of the off-registered printing that often took place in that era of time.

We also found that it would be best to make the most of the “campy” feel by using a cream/tan color paper to give the cards a vintage feeling. Other elements in the piece are the hand drawn header type treatments, handy tip images and the MCAD building. Keeping the piece only to two colors we went with Pantone 332 U, a sea foamy green. The final size of the piece folded down will be 4”x6”. A wafer seal will be used to close the piece for ease in the mailing process.

Although our particular design elements were not chosen our format concept was chosen. Below is what Miss Molly Hein Design and I created.

What it will look like once you break the seals...

R.I.P. Mitch Mitchell

There is no question in my mind that Jimi Hendrix and The Experience is one of my all time favorite groups. Yesterday, Wednesday November 12, 2008 the former drummer of The Experience Mitch Mitchell died in a Portland hotel room of natural causes. He had just wrapped a The Experience Hedrix tour five days before. It saddens me but at the same time makes me want to keep my Jimi Hendrix and The Experience in heavy rotation. Rest in Peace Mitch Mitchell. You, Noel and Jimi can jam together again.

The Death of Adam

The new 88 Keys album is something I haven't been able to stop listening to. I just got it yesterday but I worked to it, slept to it and now I'm working to it again. This album is great because it brings back the elements of a good album, it has a narrative. There is a story that you follow all the way through the whole album keeping you engaged and as a Minneapolis Emcee once mentioned that is key to an album. He broke it down to me saying that he creates a formula when writing an album. What's the equation going to be? Well, with the 88 Keys it appears to be about relationships.

The song that I like the most at this moment in time would have to be "Durty Peaches" that features J*Davey. Look out for other guest apperances by Phonte, Kayne West, Redman, Kid Cudi and Shitake Monkey.

Don't sleep on the album here's a link for a 'preview' please make sure you go out and buy this. Support Music!

New York Times BABY!!

Yooooo...I don't know how excited I am right now. I'm in the New York Mother Fuckin' Times!! That's right. And no, it's not for Photographs! It's for some shoes I made for Dre Day!!!!! Check out the list of interview questions they send me. Enjoy!!

Good Afternoon Sylviane,

First of all thank you so much for choosing my shoes I’m ecstatic! Let me
know if you need anymore information.

Thanks again,
C

Questions:

1. Confirm the spelling of your name and your class -- Christina "C-Rocka"
Rimstad, Post-Baccalaureate, Graphic Design

2. What kind of paint did you use for the images?

I used a Jacquard textile paint when creating custom chucks.

3. Describe the images and what inspired you to customize each shoe in
this way?

These shoes were inspired by an annual celebration we have in Minneapolis called Dre Day. Minneapolis based design collective Burlesque started the party almost seven years ago to celebrate legendary rap producer Dr. Dre’s birthday. Each year I’ve created a new article of clothing with the image of Dr. Dre on it to wear to the event. Dr. Dre’s album “The Chronic” has always been a heavy influence when I’m creating these pieces, which is why I chose to use a 40oz of Old English and the pot leaves on the back seam of the shoes.

4. Have you decorated other shoes, other clothing items? If so, why?
If not, why not?

Yes I have decorated other shoes and clothing items. I started doing the shoes after a friend of mine died in 2006, I made a custom pair of chucks with a cartoon character he had of himself; he was an avid converse collector. After that I was addicted to getting the high top chucks and making my mark on them. I love painting more than ever on my clothing; I’ve been doing that since I was six-seven years old. There was nothing like a rainy day when my mom would get out the fabric paints so my siblings and I could make t-shirts.

5. Have you seen other custom shoes on your campus?

Honestly, I haven't seen any custom shoes that were handmade. Of course I see the limited edition dunks and other various manufactured shoes but none hand painted.

6. Do you sell decorated shoes, or do you make them for yourself alone?

I haven't actually sold a pair of shoes but I'm definitely willing to do that. I've made shoes for others as gifts and for myself. I'm currently working on a pair of Converse All-star Chucks for HATER Magazine out of Houston.

GRADUATES

GRADUATES is an exhibition by Minneapolis-based artist Matthew Bakkom that presents the 664 graduation portraits of the Tuskegee Air Training Institute to investigate image, memory and race as it exists in our public record.

Starting in 1942, the US Army Air force created a photographic index of each of the graduates of the Air Training Program at the Tuskegee Institute, the official training program for black pilots in what was then still a segregated military. The subsequent performance of these men in WWII achieved legendary status in both social and popular imagination.Their direct participation in the post war civil rights
movement added further to their elevated status.

Bakkom approaches these figures who have been transformed by society and their actions from individuals into myths. The exhaustive specificity of the archive, the powerful plasticity of the photographic image and the sculptural aesthetics of serial
presentation are harnessed to engage the larger questions at hand. As an exhibition, GRADUATES hopes to provide a context for this previously unpublished glimpse of a collective past that might resonate with our attempts to negotiate the challenges of the moment.

New York Public Library Puts Historic Cigarette Ads on Display

I was just checking out one of my favorite daily art digs, www.artdaily.org, and I stumbled across this slide show. Historic Cigarette Ads that are truly ironic...take a look for your self. If you're in NYC stop by the library and see these in person.
