GRADUATES

GRADUATES is an exhibition by Minneapolis-based artist Matthew Bakkom that presents the 664 graduation portraits of the Tuskegee Air Training Institute to investigate image, memory and race as it exists in our public record.

Starting in 1942, the US Army Air force created a photographic index of each of the graduates of the Air Training Program at the Tuskegee Institute, the official training program for black pilots in what was then still a segregated military. The subsequent performance of these men in WWII achieved legendary status in both social and popular imagination.Their direct participation in the post war civil rights
movement added further to their elevated status.

Bakkom approaches these figures who have been transformed by society and their actions from individuals into myths. The exhaustive specificity of the archive, the powerful plasticity of the photographic image and the sculptural aesthetics of serial
presentation are harnessed to engage the larger questions at hand. As an exhibition, GRADUATES hopes to provide a context for this previously unpublished glimpse of a collective past that might resonate with our attempts to negotiate the challenges of the moment.

Get Up!

We haven’t heard much from Heiruspecs over the past couple of months but that’s probably because they’ve been busy working on the third self-titled LP set to be release in December. The first single off the album is “Get Up” has a music video that was filmed by John Kingman in St. Paul’s Eclipse records. “Get Up” has a pseudo Obama theme to it with Felix playing the role of the presidential hopeful and the remaining members of the band playing the role of secret service agents. Take a peek and mark your calendar for Heiruspecs CD release party taking place Saturday December 13, 2008 at First Avenue’s Main Room.

"Black Blondie for Obama"

A couple months ago Liz D and Tasha B from Black Blondie called me up and asked if I'd help them create an idea they had for a bumper sticker. I took their idea for this bumper sticker and put my graphic skills to work. The other night Tasha and I were downtown puttin some stickers up and a man walkin down the street looked at us with an agitated look.

"What's that say, BLACK BLONDIE?" he said uneasy.

"Yes," I responded.

"Well what's Black Blondie?" He asked insecurely.

"It's a local band. She's in it..." I stated as I pointed at Tasha. The man let out a sigh of relief and put his arm around me while laughing. This man made it very clear that if that sticker had anything racist to it there would have been some serious issues.

There was another time as well when something like this happened, maybe not in the same capacity but the awkwardness was there. I was one of the first days of Fall semester and we had to do a lil presentation about who we are and blah blah blah. I had used the Black Blondie sticker in some of the things that I've done for the presentation and then handed some of the stickers out to those that wanted them. On break my teacher came over to me and said, "I get it the sticker, am I right in thinking it's white people into black culture?"

bwwwwwwwwwwwwahahahhaaaaaaa, I just started laughing and as soon as I caught my breath I looked at him and said, "Nooooooooo, that's my friends band!"

Get to know Black Blondie here if you don't know them already!

MSTRKRFT

I had the pleasure the other night to hop on MSTRKFRT's tour bus while my girl Jen Boyles interviewed the duo. I was along taking pictures and documenting the evenings debauchery. These guys are a trip! In a good way of course they had me crackin' up most of the night and they also taught me how to play this dice game called c-low. I lost my money to the lucky man Al-P. Peep the slide show over at City Pages.

Eat Street Font

This is a project I worked on this past summer with a few kids from my class. If you'd like to download the FREE font please visit CHANK'S website here. I also pulled this entry from his website. Enjoy!

by EatStreet Fontmaking Workshop

Have fun with your food and your fonts! Here is the brand-new EatStreet font, a crazy new food font for you to type with. In addition to the regular, type-able TrueType font file, this download also comes with a folder full of food-letter jpgs for you to use in your web design work. You can't type with the full-color pictures, but you can copy and paste 'em in Photoshop to create color-explosive culinary typography. Pow! Send me a link so I can see what you design with this alphabet.

We made a video so you can see how to make a font with your food like we did. It was shot live on location in the cozy ethnic restaurants of Nicollet Ave in Minneapolis. Thank you to everybody who helped make this font and video and thanks to Molly who filmed it. Extra-special thanks goes to our star intern Sarah Jean Johnson who directed the video and coordinated the type-dining event with her fellow MCAD students.... good job Sarah!

Watch the video, then download the font below it....
