Too Big For My Skin

I was invited by Desdamona a few months ago to be part of her video "Too Big For My Skin." Desdamona is a local spoken word artist who travels on the regular spreading her words of wisdom. She is also one of the founders of the B-Girl Be event that happens annually in the Twin Cities at Intermedia Arts. With that said peep the video and pass it on if you like it!

Big ups to B-Fresh on the production tip.

The Mixtape Club

"To me, making a tape is like writing a letter — there's a lot of erasing and rethinking and starting again. A good compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do. You've got to kick off with a corker, to hold the attention (I started with "Got to Get You Off My Mind", but then realized that she might not get any further than track one, side one if I delivered what she wanted straightaway, so I buried it in the middle of side two), and then you've got to up it a notch, or cool it a notch, and you can't have white music and black music together, unless the white music sounds like black music, and you can't have two tracks by the same artist side by side, unless you've done the whole thing in pairs and...oh, there are loads of rules."--High Fidelity

Throughout the 80s into the early 90s mixtapes were huge within youth culture--making cassette tapes for your junior high sweetheart or best friend took time and lots of love. However, the increased availability of CD Burners and MP3 players made for a slow demise of the cassette-mixtape. The lost of art of the mixtape is being revived by The Mixtape Club that describes themselves as, "ten people, ten tracks, ten album covers." Although they are in a MP3 format these mixes are still follow the aesthetic pleasure that a traditional cassette mixtape would deliver to one's ear drums. The website launched today and below are links to the contributors of this amazing new project!

"Nothin’ but that jherri curl funk all day everyday"

Cosmo Baker (The Rub, NYC) and 4th Pyramid (Toronto) jokingly came up with The Sheen Brothers: a duo of slicked-out sleazesters that play greasy funk and drippy disco that make ladies lose control and guys feel like macks. Comso works it out on the tables while Pyramid holds it down on the MPD. These kats have created a new twist to disco and funk that they like to call "Scumbag Funk." If you haven't been able to make the few shows the Sheen Bros have done now you can get your body groovin with their first mix release, Scumbag Funk Vol. 1. Check out this electrifying mix of drippy-disco and be on the look in the next few months for Volume 2. Get Sleezy!

Chikan (Train Groping)

Japan is about to put the SMACK back down!

CHIKAN (TRAIN GROPING)

1) In Japan, more than 4000 men are arrested each year for groping on public transport.
2) In 2001, a survey of two private high-schools in Tokyo revealed that more than 70% had been groped on the train.
3) A recent survey of Japanese companies suggested that at least 17% of Japanese women have been groped in public.

Police crackdown

The mid-1990s brought a nationwide police crackdown on train gropers. Plain-clothes police officers were assigned to the worst affected trains during rushhour. Advertising campaigns gave advice to women who thought they were being molested: to thrust the offending hand in the air and yell “Chikan!” (”Groper!”).

Unfortunately, this hasn’t emboldened many Japanese women. Surrounded by strangers, most women would rather pretend nothing unusual is happening than create a scene. Gropers exploit this, and pick their victims carefully.

Some of the “victims” aren’t so innocent, and false accusations of groping are increasing. The shame associated with chikan makes it possible for especially enterprising young women to blackmail fellow train users.

Faced with a hysterically shrieking woman, most men are willing to be led to the nearest ATM and part with large sums of money (US$3000 isn’t uncommon).

Jonah Samson

Photographer Jonah Samson leaves little to the imagination with his latest work Pleasantville. With his dark sense of humor Samson explores American cultures fascination with sex and violence as entertainment using a diorama style set-up to create scenes that are fairly realistic. Hand crafting each of the models used Samson works in a very 'old school' way. Everything is hand-painted, assembled, shot on film and printed in the traditional analog way. There are NEVER any digital manipulations done to the work the only manipulation is that from the construction process using lighting and depth of field. Pleasantville is currently on display at the G. Gibson Gallery in Seattle until the end of July. If you can't make the show check out Jonah Samson's website where you can contact him directly to purchase the softbound, full-colour 8"x10" 36 page book.

Two-Finger Ring

I had some left over plywood from the stamps I made so I decided to make a couple rings. Here's a ring I made for my girl in CHI for her b-day. I carved the ring out of the wood, sanded it down, stained the wood and then used a metallic paint for the design on top.

Field Guidezine

The past two weeks have gone by so fast and I feel like I missed out on a few cool things. I was cooped up in my Apt. working my ass off on this final project we had for class. I'll admit it was nice having the final combined between the two class but I dug myself into a hole. I was up until 2-3AM every night drawing...drawing...scanning...drawing...scanning...you get the picture.

Our project was to create a zine. The two teachers had picked out four different areas of land, beach, mountain, dessert and forest. We all had to create a cover system and then vote on who's cover system we'd us for the cover. After that we were free to do whatever we wanted to the guts. I had the topic beach, here's what it looks like.
