I'm Judging a Battle?!

Yes it is true, rap battles are still going. Thanks to Eminem's 8-Mile rap battles became widly popular and some of the worst people were coming out and showing us their wanna be skills. I'm looking forward to judging this upcoming battle at the Blue Nile the fourth Saturday in June, maybe there will be some sick verses. If you're around come on down and check out the action.

Dam-Funk remixes Animal Collective

I had the pleasure of catchin' Dam-Funk throw down when he was in Minneapolis a few weeks ago during the Stones Throw DJ tour. I didn't know what to expect but I was definitely blown away. The way he cut the funk and then threw some of his own vocals over it?! NUTS! Dam-Funk put his spin on Animal Collective "Summertime Clothes," check it out. Do you like it??

Listen to M.P.L.S. + FranzDeigo.com

Listen to MPLS is a weekly podcast that was started by FranzDiego, Noam the Drummer and Alicia Steele. The show provides a voice for people in Minneapolis and what they’re doing and or working on. Musicians, Artists, Political Activists, Mothers, Fathers, you name it they’re a guest! The threesome talks about whatever and whoever they want, however, watch your step around the lady of the show she’s got a mean bark (in a good way of course)!

The crew will be hosting a re-launch of their website and celebration of the start of the second season of the podcast at the Dintkytowner this coming Saturday. FranzDiego will also be releasing a free mixtape that every attendee will receive in the promotion for his upcoming album due to be release this summer. Noam the Drummer from Radio K’s The Beat Box will hold it down on the tables with performances by Alicia Steele, Sevadar Sehaj, Alissa Paris, Greg Greas & Ak-Libertto of The Usual Suspects and FranzDiego.com.

Redesign of Emil Ruder's "Typographie"

In the middle of March my typography class had an awesome project assigned to it a collaboration project. When it was first assigned the class (four of us) were super excited about redesigning the classic typography book, “Typographie” by Emil Ruder. The weeks went by and some of us felt less and less motivated by the project and it turned almost into a chore. Well last night we busted out the final piece!

As a group we collectively decided to take the book and make it into a box that would be able to travel to different libraries to be used as an education tool on typography. A lot of love, sweat and tears, YES TEARS, went into this project. The box sits 12”x12”x3” with an amazing pattern made by Mz. Molly Hein based off the cover of Ruder’s book. Inside the contents are:

-A bellyband that wraps around the box. Designed by Catherine Grothe. (I don’t have any pictures of this oops :( )

-A motion graphics piece, which has been formatted to a DVD and stuck to the lid of the box. Designed by Catherine Grothe & Matt Van Ekeren.

-24”x24” With quotes from the intro of the book in regards to the practice of typography according to Emil Ruder and on the other side a duo-toned image of Emil Ruder. Designed by Christina "C-Rocka" Rimstad.

-Three Pamphlets about the history and development of typography over the years. They are also in a square format (I don’t know the dimensions off the top of my head) and are in an accordion fold. Designed by Mz. Molly Hein and Matt Van Ekeren.

-Sheets of paper to use to make a message with the stamps in the box. Designed by Catherine Grothe.

-A set of stamps along with some symbols of the UNIVERS 65 Bold typeface. Designed by Christina "C-Rocka" Rimstad.

Check out some more images of the process on my Flickr page here.
