Dutty Geisha

(Awesome Packaging)

(The ring and necklace I grabbed)

My girls over at Wrong Lips did a lil write up about SAKIR aka Dutty Geisha on their blog last month. When I read the post I was immediately drawn to her crafty, sophisticated, funky jewelry that I just had to get me some! Unfortunately the link on Wrong Lips wasn't working but SAKIR saw my comment and hit me up. I'm so happy she did I grabbed a couple of pieces from her and they arrived last night. SAKIR took the time to package the pieces in these individual beautiful envelopes and also included two samples of her oils, which are delicious! Please support this Brooklyn artist and get yourself some one of a kind jewelry. She's having a sale all through April on her Etsy site check it out. Peace & Love to SAKIR!

Black Blondie CD Release Tomorrow Night!

Two years in the making Black Blondie is finally releasing their debut full-length album, Do You Remember Who You Wanted To Be, which has proven to be anything but disappointing. The album is filled with intense emotions of story telling on themes such as self-examination, loss and love along with a wide range of influential sounds such as Jazz, Afro Beat, Dirty Hip-Hop and Soul. Black Blondie also prides themselves on writing all their songs, in other words, they didn’t sample ANYTHING!

Join Samahra Daly, the sassy front woman of Black Blondie, along with other band members Tasha Baron (Keys) and Liz Draper (Bass) tomorrow night at the Triple Rock Social Club to celebrate the release. The show will include opening acts from Ghanaian emcee, M.anifest, Chastity Brown along with her live band and DJ Turtleneck on the tables keeping the crowd moving with his signature mixes of hip-hop, dance and soul music.

Bonus-download “For the Taste” here

What's On Deck?

The El Michels Affair! This group is amazing. I haven't been able to stop listening to this tribute album since I threw it on the computer. The group does cover songs of popular groups like Wu-Tang. Hopefully next week sometime I'll have the leak of the 37 Chambers WuTang cover album, but in the meantime check out this tribute to Isaac Hayes that did.

Blaqstarr @ SXSW

Everyone is STILL talkin' about SXSW!! If you didn't make it down there this year like me indulge yourself in this clip of Blaqstarr getting down on the mic. The sound is a bit shotty with a few feedback issues but see what he put out to the crowd and hopefully what we'll all be hearing on his forth coming album.

You wake-up in the morning look around and see you're not in your apt/house you're some where else. You walk to the bathroom and your hair is a mess, massacre all over and smeared lipstick on your face. Last night was fun but you don't want to walk out the door in your outfit from last night lookin a fright!

Thanks to the Walk of Shame kit you won't have to worry about that anymore. The kit comes with a dress, flip flops, backpack, sunglasses, pre-pasted toothbrush (sweet), wipes, call/don't call leave behind note card and an awareness bracelet (for breast cancer).

Quannum x Reebox

This is a new millennium; a new year and it is even more important that we as consumers express our concerns towards ‘green’ manufacturing. I amongst others am a huge sneaker head so we MUST hold sneaker makers, ESPECIALLY artists that have their logos, labels and or name on a sneaker ACCOUNTABLE!

With that said I would like to bring up the Quannum x Reebox Sneaker Collection. The Quannum x Reebox collection are limited edition sneakers brought to you by Shoe Biz SF, Quannum, Reebox and ShopDJShadow.com. The series of shoes include Quannaum x Reebox, DJ Shadow x Reebox, Blackalicious x Reebox and Latryx x Reebox sneakers. Although these shoes are dope my girl Annette Musick did a little research to find out if they were in fact ‘green.’

Annette contacted ShopDJShadow.com inquiring what kind of materials the shoes were made out of because it would affect her purchase of these shoes. Monica from customer services replied,

“Unfortunately we did not have anything to do with the actual manufacturing of the sneakers, so I’m not sure how they were made. Please contact Reebok, as their company should have more information on the labor conditions and materials used to make the shoes.”

So where do we draw the line or better yet where does an artist draw the line when putting their name on branding? Yes, it would be dope to have your own shoe but do you as an artist support a ‘green’ lifestyle? If so then wouldn’t putting your name on something that isn’t made in a ‘green’ factory out of ‘green’ materials something maybe they should be conscious about? Unfortunately the people at Quannum haven’t taken that step and don’t feel they need to.

Here's the shoes...However, you need to be the judge on wheather or not you purchase them.

I Want My $25 Back Estelle!!

PHOTO BY DAN CORRIGAN for City Pages

I was so stoked about last Friday's show at First Ave, Estelle. I've been lovin' this girl for a hot min, I even brought my FADER down for her to sign. Well, it turns out Estelle may be too good for people that support her ass. Her attitude was sour and I wasn't extremly impressed with her show either. I'll give it up to her band and singers they were all on point. Estelle, if you ever come across this blog I would appreciate the refund for my ticket of your show in Minneapolis on Feb 27th, 2009 at First Ave.
